My father (and the family, of course) belonged to the Hebrew Beneficial Society, a "friendly" society that took care of what would now be insured events, health care, job loss (I think), etc. I was very young so I don't remember it well, only the name and that it seemed well regarded
That's so interesting- a quick search for Hebrew Beneficial Societies (near me in NC at least) seems like many here pre-date the Friendly Societies of England. I knew about these cross-cultures, but didn't think of searching across time! Thanks for sharing.
